What Success Means to Me

True success is neither brief nor surprising. It is the culmination of real effort, energy and time, and it is expected, given the energy exerted.

This holiday season, we celebrate true success in the form of new customers, new business for longstanding customers, new employees, and the retirement of long term employees.

We are grateful for the effort and dedication by our employees (new and tenured) on behalf of our company, and we sincerely hope that we, as a company, bestow ample recognition for those efforts.

With that said, this is our commitment to you (our employees) in 2022. We will continue to be an organization you can be proud to work for. We will continue to reward your fine efforts. We will stand by you and behind you. Every success and reward will be collectively recognized as OURS. We will hear your voice, and we will do our very best for you and our customers.

Crazy Fast Year, Crazy Good Growth

Looking back, it is hard to fathom everything we saw in one, short year!

This year went by so fast, and business was in a constant state of progress. In 2021, we were happy to introduce several new customers to our lines. Some examples are as follows:

• LVRR - Full Service Transloader

• LVRR - Lumber Receiver

• LVRR - Marcellus-Related Liquids and Industrial Lubricants Customer

• SVRR - Scrap Metal Shipper

• UCIR - Chemicals Receiver (as a part of an expansion)

We also have two more new customers whose first shipments are due to arrive in the coming weeks:

• LVRR - Malt Customer

• NBER - Plastics Transloader

We saw our business grow so rapidly, we had to source and purchase new equipment (a good problem to have). Part of this growth was due to a handful of our existing customers handling new lines of business this year:

• JVRR Customer - New Feed-Related Ingredients

• LVRR Customer - New Anthracite Coal Business

• NSHR Customer - New Agriculture-Related Commodities

The end of expansion is nowhere in sight.

On Monday December 6th, North Shore Representatives and local officials joined Ed Button of Button Oil & Propane to celebrate the announcement of Pennsylvania Governor’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program Grant Award to Mr. Button’s company. This was one of the final steps in the development of the former (and unused) PennDOT rest area along Route 11 - just north of Northumberland, PA.

When we purchased this land, it was what Pennsylvania State Representative Lynda Schlegel Culver termed “an eyesore.” Work to develop this lot into a transload site started back in 2019 with the initial meetings between our Marketing Department and Mr. Button. Having identified the need for a site, our team went to work and deemed this location as a suitable site. The company bought the land and took the lead on site development. New tracks were constructed along the NSHR Main, and the site was graded for tank pads and paved for truck access - making a “pad ready” site for Button Oil & Propane’s further development.

This project is the perfect example of how private sector businesses, state legislators, local government, and a public authority can come together to turn an unused site into a productive development project that can help fill a market need in our region.

Toy for Tots 2021

For the 18th consecutive year, we invited North American Railcar Operators Association (NARCOA) motorcar drivers (with the help of Larry Maynard from Central PA Excursions), to ride the NSHR (from Northumberland to Danville and return) and, for the third year, the UCIR (from New Columbia, to Allenwood, then Winfield and return). Along the way, the drivers helped collect toys for the US Marine Corp Reserve Toys for Tots drive.

With the help of all of the families who waited along the railroad tracks to make donations, we are excited to report $3,000 in donations and more than 1,440 toys were collected! That is a lot of Christmas cheer for a lot of children. Thank you to all who participated and donated!!
