2017: North Shore Railroad Company Congratulations from the PA Senate

In the Senate, May 24, 2017

Whereas, the Senate of Pennsylvania takes great pride in recognizing those entities which, through adherence to the highest standards of service, contribute in a meaningful way toward a better and more productive society; and
Whereas, The North Shore Railroad Company was recently honored as the Short Line of the Year by Norfolk Southern during its Short Line Convention, which was held in Norfolk, Virginia, in May 2017; and
Whereas, Comprised of six short line railroads, the North Shore Railroad Company operates more than two hundred forty-seven miles of track owned by the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority and provides quality rail service to a variety of businesses and industries in central Pennsylvania. To its great credit, the company was also honored as the Shore Line Railroad of the Year by “Railway Age” magazine and received a Marketing Award from the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association during its Annual Short Line Meeting, which was held in Grapevine, Texas, in April 2017. In the past year, the North Shore Railroad Company handled a total of sixty dimensional shipments across its system, which took more than twenty-one million pounds of components off Pennsylvania roads. In order to handle the shipments and provide uninterrupted service to its regular customers, the company assigned more than sixty special train crews and prepared by measuring track curvatures and clearance points, having bridge ratings completed and addressing movable clearance concerns in advance of shipments. The North Shore Railroad Company has developed a strong reputation for the highest quality of service throughout its history. By steady adherence to the principals of fairness, reliability and integrity, it has become a leader in the community and a model that is worthy of emulation. Over the years, those in leadership positions, as well as its staff members, have contributed in a tremendous way to its growth and development.
Now therefore, the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania congratulates the North Shore Railroad Company upon its richly deserved recognition; extends warmest wishes for a future replete with ever-increasing success and service to the community;

2017: North Shore Railroad Company Citation from the PA House of Representatives

Whereas, The North Shore Railroad Company is being honored during the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) Annual Short Line Meeting with the 2017 Railway Age Short Line Railroad of the Year and 2017 ASLRRA Marketing Awards; and
Whereas, Each Year Railway Age magazine awards only one of more than five hundred short line railroads in the United States the title of Short Line Railroad of the Year, and the ASLRRA Marketing Award is only presented to three such railroads throughout the country. During the past year, North Shore Railroad Company handled a substantial volume of high and wide shipments that kept more than twenty-one million pounds of components off of Pennsylvania roads. In order to accomplish this task, the company worked and collaborately planned with many parties including shippers and logistics providers, other railroads, customers, rigging companies, adjoining land owners and local and county governments, and overcame challenges regarding highway access, clearances, crossing protection, impact on regular railroad operations and customers and special train crew availability. Despite the amount of time and attention the dimensional shipments required, there was no interruption in service to the North Shore Railroad Company’s regularly served customers. To its great credit, in addition to its other awards, the company was also honored by Norfolk Southern as the Short Line Railroad of the Year. With innovative and progressive attitude, along with the conviction to operate with integrity and vision the company has established a reputation of excellent quality and service since its inception.
Now therefore, the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania salutes the North Shore Railroad Company upon its well-deserved recognition; offers best wishes for continued growth and prosperity in the years to come;
And directs that a copy of this citation, sponsored by Representative Lynda Schlegel Culver, Fred Keller and Jeff C. Wheeland on April 5, 2017, be transmitted to the North Shore Railroad Company.

2009: Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad Congratulations from the United States House of Representatives

Glenn “GT” Thompson
Fifth District
Pennsylvania

August 6, 2009

Mr. Dick Roby, president NBER

Dear Dick,
It is my honor to congratulate the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad on its 25th Anniversary.
The Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad (NBER) has continued a historic tradition in our region that dates back more than 150 years under names: Alleghany & Bald Eagle Railroad, Coal & Iron Co., Bellefonte & Snow Shoe Railroad, Tyrone & Lock Haven Railroad and Bald Eagle Valley Railroad.
Whatever it was called and through the economic ups and downs of our nation and our region the NBER has chugged on moving the goods that make America a great nation.
Throughout its history the NBER has serviced it customers by hauling coal and iron ore for a growing nation. During two World Wars the little railroad played a big part in fueling Pennsylvania’s historic manufacturing industries; industries that in no small part defeated enemies of freedom.
After the Second World War the NBER became part of America’s colossal industrial muscle and in the 1950s as technology was upgraded the NBER became a fist class Centralized Traffic Control route handling coal trains headed to Buffalo, New York.
In 1984, SEA-Council of Governments acquired the rail line and the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad was created to provide regional rail service to Blair, Centre and Clinton counties. In 2004, the NBER was named “Short Line Railroad of the Year” by Railway Age magazine.
Today, the NBER moves 75,000 cars per year including the 60,000 cars for Norfolk Southern and Pennsylvania Power & Light. The railroad supplies service for 16 customers moving coal, stone and stone products, paper, plastics, chemicals, fertilizer, wood products, grain, food, metal, building products, cement and highway construction material.
It is an honor for me to represent the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad and all the people that have kept it running for the past 25 years and those who will keep it rolling into the future.

Sincerely,
G.T. Thompson
Member of Congress

Whereas, the Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad is being congratulated upon the momentous occasion of its twenty-fifth anniversary; and
Whereas, Established on August 1, 1984, the Nittany and Bald Eagle Railroad was originally built by the Tyrone and Lock Haven Railroad in 1857 to serve the coal and iron industries of Milesburg and Bellefonte. Today it is one of six short line railroads comprising the North Shore System. The seventy-mile railroad line preserves rail transportation for industry in Blair, Centre and Clinton Counties, hauling large quantities of stone and general merchandise, and serving as a bridge line for the movement of coal to power plants. Since its inception, the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad has maintained a tradition of excellence, remaining responsive to the ever-changing needs of the community it serves.
