2009: Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad Congratulations from the United States House of Representatives

Glenn “GT” Thompson
Fifth District
Pennsylvania

August 6, 2009

Mr. Dick Roby, president NBER

Dear Dick,

It is my honor to congratulate the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad on its 25th Anniversary.

The Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad (NBER) has continued a historic tradition in our region that dates back more than 150 years under names: Allegheny & Bald Eagle Railroad, Coal & Iron Co., Bellefonte & Snow Shoe Railroad, Tyrone & Lock Haven Railroad and Bald Eagle Valley Railroad.

Whatever it was called and through the economic ups and downs of our nation and our region the NBER has chugged on moving the goods that make America a great nation.

Throughout its history the NBER has serviced it customers by hauling coal and iron ore for a growing nation. During two World Wars the little railroad played a big part in fueling Pennsylvania’s historic manufacturing industries; industries that in no small part defeated enemies of freedom.

After the Second World War the NBER became part of America’s colossal industrial muscle and in the 1950s as technology was upgraded the NBER became a fist class Centralized Traffic Control route handling coal trains headed to Buffalo, New York.

In 1984, SEA-Council of Governments acquired the rail line and the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad was created to provide regional rail service to Blair, Centre and Clinton counties. In 2004, the NBER was named “Short Line Railroad of the Year” by Railway Age magazine.

Today, the NBER moves 75,000 cars per year including the 60,000 cars for Norfolk Southern and Pennsylvania Power & Light. The railroad supplies service for 16 customers moving coal, stone and stone products, paper, plastics, chemicals, fertilizer, wood products, grain, food, metal, building products, cement and highway construction material.

It is an honor for me to represent the Nittany & Bald Eagle Railroad and all the people that have kept it running for the past 25 years and those who will keep it rolling into the future.

Sincerely,
G.T. Thompson
Member of Congress
